How to Use a OFTC-Registered Nickname on matrix.org
As described here: If you have a OFTC-registered nickname and want to use it from Matrix, you can do it like this:

# On Matrix, open a new chat (with Riot app this is the "+" sign on the bottom right)
# On Matrix, open a new chat (with Riot app this is the "+" sign on the bottom right)
# Invite @oftc-irc:matrix.org to the new chat
# Invite @oftc-irc:matrix.org to the new chat
# Say !nick <yournick>
# Say !nick <yournick>
# A request for new chat with NickServ will pop up. Accept it and identify yourself with your OFTC password (identify <password>)
# A request for new chat with NickServ will pop up (if not invite @_oftc_NickServ:matrix.org). Accept it.
# Send "REGISTER <password> <email>" to register your nickname.
# "identify <password>" can be used to authenticate (in case the bridge reconnects)

Voila, you'll be using your OFTC-registered nick through Matrix, being able to use multiple devices simultaneously with shared history and all!
** For Freenode:
    "!cmd MODE #<channel name> +e *!*@gateway/shell/matrix.org/*"

=== How to Start Private IRC Chats, like /msg or /query ===
** For OFTC:
    "!cmd MODE #<channel name> +e *!*@2001:470:1af1:101:*"

On Matrix, open a new chat (with Riot app this is the "+" sign on the bottom right)
* From IRC:
Invite @_oftc_<nick>:matrix.org to the new chat (replace <nick> with the nick name. For example, to start a chat with NickServ, invite @_oftc_NickServ:matrix.org)

To register a nick use /msg NickServ REGISTER <password> <email> ie, with your direct chat with @_oftc_NickServ:matrix.org, send REGISTER <password> <email>
** For Freenode:
    "/mode #<channel name> +e *!*@gateway/shell/matrix.org/*"

This works for nicks that are known to matrix.org, i.e. if the nick has never joined an IRC channel that was bridged to matrix it won't work.
** For OFTC:
    "/mode #<channel name> +e *!*@2001:470:1af1:101:*"
