| '''What is FOSS?'''
| |
|
| |
| Free and open source software (FOSS) is software that is both free software and open source. It is liberally licensed to grant users the right to use, copy, study, change, and improve its design through the availability of its source code. Here the term “free” does not mean “zero-dollar”, but it means freedom of four forms. They are
| |
|
| |
| *The freedom to run the program, for any purpose (freedom 0).
| |
| *The freedom to study how the program works, and change it so it does your computing as you wish (freedom 1). Access to the source code is a precondition for this.
| |
| *The freedom to redistribute copies so you can help your neighbor (freedom 2).
| |
| *The freedom to distribute copies of your modified versions to others (freedom 3). By doing this you can give the whole community a chance to benefit from your changes. Access to the source code is a precondition for this.
| |
|
| |
|
| |
| To remind this, the famous motto of FSF(Free Software Foundation) is used.
| |
| “free” as in “free speech,” not as in “free beer”.
| |
|
| |
| Free Software provides the user complete freedom over the product. He can change it in any way he wants, sell it, share it, distribute it, anything he wants.
| |
|
| |

We also plan to maintain a mailing list and a BB Forum, to provide latest news and technical assistance to the group members. The details of events will be discussed with staff in-charge, HOD and principal and then finalised. Collaboration with CSI can also be considered so as to avail enough funds for carrying out the activities.
